Mich ael Praetorius' gorgeous Christmas carol has been beautifully arranged for Brass Quintet by, Scott MacInnes. The Praetorius harmonization is from 1609 and is the most familiar setting of this German hymn, also known as Es ist ein Ros entsprungen.
This arrangement is about 5 minutes in length and is performed below by the Pinnacle Brass from their Christmas recording The Earth Shall Ring!

I wrote this Christmas cantata from Koroshegy at the request of the Council of the Komitat Somogy. When I visited the still unrenovated little church at Koroshegy about ten years ago I had no idea that this beautiful Gothic building would one day be the scene of the world premiere of one of my works. - The cantata is founded on four pillars: four organ soli which could be described as ritornelli, followed by four a cappella choruses with the same melody but different harmonizations. A narrator introduces the individual numbers with passages from the Christmas story. An organ postlude concludes the work. The cantata O heilige Zeit [O Holy Time] of the former St. Thomas cantor Johann Kuhnau is the ideal baroque festive music for small scorings. Even though this is the larger of two cantatas with this text underlay, it can be performed by four soloists (SATB), single or double strings, and continuo organ. The participation of a choir in non-soloistic passages is optional, for historically unproven. The cantata was composed in the years 1704/05 and can therefore be placed in Kuhnau's term as St. Thomas cantor in Leipzig. A contemporary text by Erdmann Neumeister is fitted with a modern musical garb here while keeping unconditional adherence to it. Using a structural artifice as simple as it is effective, he provides a ritornello-like musical equivalent to the repeatedly recurring line of text O heilige Zeit!. This edition continues the series of works by Kuhnau started in the Pfefferkorn Musikverlag. Another festive music by Kuhnau with larger scoring is found in the Magnificat in C major, deemed a direct predecessor of Bach's Magnificat.

Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612), son of an organist, was born in Nuremberg and received his initial training in music from his father. As a young man he studied in Venice and became close friends with Giovanni Gabrieli, both eventually studying composition with Giovanni's Uncle Andrea. Hassler gained a reputation as an innovative composer and also traveled throughout Germany as a consultant in the construction of pipe organs.

Dr. Palmer has transcribed this exciting 3 minute work for 6 part Trombone ensemble. It will work well for intermediate performers.

Verbum caro factum est is a beautiful choral work written in antiphonal style. The text has been taken by Hassler from the first chapter of the St. John Gospel and is considered an ancient carol of Christmas based on the text.
