Johannes Brahms?s Piano Sonatas opp. 1 2 and 5 were among the first works that the 20-year-old composer published. They were composed in 1852/53 although the Sonata in f-sharp minor was apparently the first of the three to becomposed as it was finished by November 1852. This work has a special place in his oeuvre. Besides its passionate atmosphere his contemporaries discerned it to be ?serious and dignified in character?. Brahms dedicated thissonata to Clara Schumann whose husband Robert wrote to the composer that ?Your second sonata my friend has brought me much closer to you?. The ingenious fingerings have been provided by the pianist Andreas Boyde a recognisedBrahms expert.

revised single edition from HN 38-Johannes Brahms?s piano sonatas opp. 1 2 and 5 were among the first works that the then 20-year-old composer published. Much of the music of the f-minor Sonata is closely connected to Brahms?s visit to Robert and Clara Schumannin Düsseldorf in the autumn of 1853. There are indications that the young Brahms was inspired by Robert Schumann?s Sonata op. 14 which was also in f minor. The music critic Eduard Hanslick also believed that he could discern theinfluence of Brahms?s older colleague when he wrote about the Sonata op. 5: ?The whole of Brahms is here though still under the spell of Schumann?. This revised Urtext edition is based on the musical text of the New BrahmsComplete Edition. The fingerings are by Andreas Boyde and offer the performer highly ingenious solutions to mastering this piano work that is so symphonic in scope.

They offertoday?s musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources but also a comprehensive approach to the works which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. The Violin and Viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim?s pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms? associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the Violoncello sonatas drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major) Hugo Becker with whom Brahms performed it and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.

Sonata WoO postum for Violin and Piano-Edited by Clive Brown and Neal Peres Da Costa with an Urtext solo part as well as a second part with performance markings.Johannes Brahms The Works for one Instrument and Piano:Johannes Brahms? compositions for one instrument and Piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual playerswho first performed these compositions including Brahms himself. The New Urtext Editions:Bärenreiter?s pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms? works for one instrument and Piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works. An integral part of Bärenreiter?s Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo rubato rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms? own Piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed. The Violin and Viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations but also with an

It is the slow movement of the Piano Sonata In C Major Op.1 which uses the song 'Verstohlen geht der Mond auf' that bears the earliest date April 1852.With this passionate and highly virtuosic Sonata Brahms introduced himself to the great of the musical world of his day including the Schumanns in Düsseldorf. Clara Schumann wrote afterwards that '... the whole is full of exuberant fantasy intimacy of expression and mastery of form'.Brahms' Op. 1 now appears in a separateHenle Urtext edition revised using the musical text of the Brahms Complete Edition. In the well-known song cycle Opus 59 published by Brahmshimself the Groth songs are also to be found together with other songs. The reason why Johannes Brahms? Brahms completed his Cello Sonata op. 99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the piano. Even though the work was generally received positively, it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the cello repertoire.Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists, Becker and Klengel, had a connection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. As such, the Barenreiter edition comes with a cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms' contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked Urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive Preface. The first performances were given privately directly afterwards and the press enthusiastically reported: “Thesonatas [...] are wonderful and will cause a great sensation”. / Violoncelle Et Piano

Chamber Music? BA 9600Brahms had already announced his 'retirement' from composition when in the spring of 1894 he played chamber music with the cellist Robert Hausmann and the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This encounter renewed Brahms' enthusiasm for Mühlfeld?s muchadmired playing and inspired him to write two new Clarinet sonatas in the summer of the same year. Brahms and Mühlfeld premiered the works and played them in several performances until the Sonatas Op.120 were first published in June 1895. These two works remain pivotal in the Clarinet?s recital repertoire establishing the Clarinet sonata as a distinct and viable chamber music genre. This edition features an extensive preface that informs about the sonatas? origins their compositional process pre-publication performances and their publication history as well as their early reception. Another truly remarkable aspect of this publication is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. On the basis of manifold sources which include memoirs by pupils and chamber music partners treatises and essays early instructive editions and historical recordings the editors deal with key issues in understanding Brahms' notation. The latest work, the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Bach's autographs, as well as a - previously ignored - early version of Wq 71 which, like BWV 1036, grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert, together with Joseph Hellmesberger, but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works, C. P. E. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works, C. P. E. Bach bridged the gap between the late Baroque sonatas of his father and the early classical 'Klaviersonate mit begleitender Violine' [Piano Sonata with Accompanying Violin]. / Violon Et Piano
