En 1849, Schumann se tourna vers un nouveau genre: la composition d'oeuvres pour piano accompagné d'un instrument soliste. Inaugurant ce nouveau genre, les Fantasiestücke pour piano et clarinette op. 73 furent immédiatement suivies par l'Adagio et Allegro op. 70. Clara joua la nouvelle oeuvre, ccompagnée du corniste E. Julius Schlitterlau, rapportant ensuite dans son journal: 'L'oeuvre est superbe, d'une grande fraîcheur et passionnée, ainsi que je les aime tant!' Schumann luimême était tout à fait conquis par sa nouvelle composition. Pour impressionner l'éditeur Kistner, Schumann mit en évidence l' 'Allegro brillante', dont la partie de soliste est si virtuose, que l'op. 70 est encore à l'heure actuelle un véritable défi pour chaque corniste. / Cor Et Piano / Partition
