Eleven short reflections on Bist du bei mir by G.H. Stölzel arr J.S. Bach for piano (easy to intermediate)Judith Serota was Executive Director of the Spitalfields Festivals in east London until late 2007. As asurprise leaving present to her the then Artistic Director of the Festival Diana Burrell conceived the idea of assembling a set of Piano pieces of easy to intermediate difficulty for her to play. These were to be variations ona theme: Bist du bei mir a song for voice and continuo in J.S. Bach's second Klavierbüchlein or 'Little Keyboard Book'.The variations were written by the Artistic Directors of the Spitalfields Festival all composers with whom Judith had worked over the preceding 20 years. Since then several more composers linked to the Festival during those years have contributed pieces. The result is Variations for Judith 'eleven short reflections' on the theme.

Judith Weir's The Wild Reeds for Organ.'The Wild Reeds is a ten-minute partita made up of an original theme followed by six variations which are played continuously. The theme was partlyinspired by folk music for outdoor wind instruments from eastern Europe rugged yet delicate at the same time. Another important inspiration has been the Organ sonorities which result from unusual divisions of the octave producing strange chords and ghostly harmonisations of melodies. Above all The Wild Reeds has been written for Thomas Trotter (who personally commissioned this music and gave much valuable advice during its composition) in honourof his remarkable thirty years as Birmingham City Organist.' - Judith Weir

Judith Weir's Day Break Shadows Flee for solo Piano. This 10 minute work was commissioned by BBC Radio 3. It was first performed by Benjamin Grosvenor on 1st September 2014 as part of the PromsChamber Music Series at Cadogan Hall.'Day Break Shadows Flee written for Benjamin Grosvenor is a Two-Part Invention a Piano solo composition in which the two hands work in close co-ordination butindependently. My intention was generally to avoid using thick chords (although octaves and other clear sonorities are included) while allowing both the right and left-hand lines to be free mobile and expressive. The treble andbass sectors of the keyboard are clearly contrasted and often widely separated. In atmosphere and expression the music is another kind of two-part invention contrasting bright upwards-arching phrases (heard at the opening andevoking the arrival of light at the beginning of the day) with veiled mysterious scurryings suggesting the stranger more nervous life lived at night and in the early morning.' - Judith Weir

Distance and Enchantment is a musical essay considering the strikingly common occurrence of people who disappear from home never to return. It takes the form of two meditations on traditional songs which are playedtogether without a break amounting to a single movement of about eleven minutes duration. The first song The Dark Eyed Gipsy tells of a woman who of her own accord leaves her home to roam the unknown world with a band ofgipsies; and the second A ghaoil lig dhachaigh gu m'mathair mi tells of a girl who wanders a little too far from home on a dark night and is stolen away by the fairies. Scored for Violin Cello Viola and Piano. Scoreand parts included.

Commissioned by the Scottish International Piano Competition as the test piece for the 2007 Competition. Using the phrase ?I?ve turned the page? in conversation implies that you?ve made a new start and possibly left anold bad habit behind; as in ?I never used to practise the Piano but now I?ve turned the page?. I?ve Turned The Page... asks the performer to undertake several such drastic transformations within a veryshort space of time. As each page of the score is turned and sometimes in between turns the music?s character changes radically. The performer also has to develop rapidly during the five or six minutes it takes to play thispiece.

Score and Parts.Commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Centre. First performance 19 May 1998 Merkin Concert Hall New York City.Quoting Weir: 'In my previous work I have often enjoyed inventing titles whichattempt to encapsulate the particular world of each composition but this fifteen minutes piece for violin cello and piano is simply entitled Piano Trio . What is the reason for this unusually abstract description? I thinkperhaps that in this piece the many external impressions which habitually make up my musical world have become too numerous and too personal to be pinned down in the space of few words that a composition title allows. The firstmovement began in my mind with impressions of Venice as relayed in Schubert's song Gondelfahrer; the crisp midnight air the dark choppy water the bells tolling the gondolier alone in emotional turmoil. Schubert's world is aplace where I can find constant inspiration and strength. The second movement recalls a time when I was called from a phone box in Africa. At one moment I was alone in my room the next (or so it seemed in my imagination)surrounded by light heat and sudden energy and activity. The movement is not however an evocation of African music; it takes the form of a scherzo and trio which collide with each other at the movement's conclusion.Thethird movement formed in my mind whilst I was reading some Gaelic poetry from the Hebridean island of Lewis on Scotland 's far flung Atlantic fringe. I was thinking of the bleached white beaches in that part of the world whereevery object lying on the sand - a washed-up bottle or a bird's skeleton - is a major event in a deserted landscape. The same might be said of this short set of musical variations where melodic fragments are laid out with plentyof space around them clear and plain for everyone to hear.

Judith Weir's The Tree Of Peace was composed in 2016 for Organ. Commissioned in loving memory of Richard Axtell (1952-2015) talented and much-loved organist at the Parish of St. Andrew West Tarring. 'It'senormously inspiring to see the Master of the Queen's Music turning her attention to the organ once again. Judith Weir's The Tree Of Peace is a short piece commissioned in memory of the organist Richard Axtell... Despite thesimplicity of the music it carries all the hallmarks of Weir's unmistakeably refined idiom.' - Stephen Farr Choir and Organ Jan 2018 From the Master of the Queen's Music Judith Weir comes The Tree ofPeace which was commissioned in memory of Richard Axtell organist of the parish church in West Tarring West Sussex. It was given its first performance there by Charles Harrison on the 17 June 2017. It lasts some 4 minutes andproves to be a thoroughly engaging piece in her customary refined idiom. It is in three main sections with a graded increase of tempo throughout. Thematic material is presented at the start cantabile. The central sectionprovides an energetic development marked animato leading to the conclusion molto mosso which gives the theme as in the opening but in augmentation. Throughout I feel an orchestral sense of colour and interrelationships inthe music - and have found it delightful to play. A modest two manual and pedal instrument with some contrasted quiet colours available will suffice and the technical demands are by no means severe. A delightful addition to therepertoire of short self-contained delightful pieces. - Organists' Review Duration: Approx 4 minutes.
