Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.

Ewazen seemingly takes inspiration from an endless array of sights, environments, and events. It would be impossible for him to be exposed to the wonder of Angkor Wat and to not distill his impressions into music. In fact, he created four distinct impressions for wind ensemble. Performance notes are included, which help to describe the settings and the thoughts behind them.

The great percussionist Evelyn Glennie has commissioned well over 100 new works over the years, and has embarked upon a special commissioning project, 50 for 50, in celebration of her 50th birthday. Each of the works is to be for solo instrument and of 50 bars only. Ewazen chose the marimba as the instrument, and a duality for the musical aspects. He notes, Larkspur is the July birth flower, Ruby is the July birthstone of my dear friend, Evelyn Glennie. Dedicated to her with love and fond appreciation. For advanced performers.

Another commissioned work has Ewazen borrowing from his own The Eternal Dance of Life for a special new gift for cello and piano. The composer says it best: As a former cellist in my youth, have always loved the instrument, and have enjoyed writing for it. The work contains swirling arpeggiated gestures, a lilting compound meter and a real sense of expressivity, allowing the cello to sing with soaring lines and genuine lyricism. For advanced performers.

Eric Ewazen’s THREE INVENTIONS were inspired by Bach’s Two-part Inventions, yet they sound thoroughly like Ewazen. Composed for harpsichord (with a piano adaptation following later), Ewazen’s inventions maintain a pure “one note per hand” texture until their final chord, with strong-but-free imitative counterpoint between the two voices. While Ewazen may be best known for his wind music, he is a pianist himself, and composers’ works for their own instrument are a direct insight into how they write for their own performances. The piano adaptation of THREE INVENTIONS is also available as a separate publication.THREE INVENTIONS was written for my dear friend Maria Rojas, who premiered the work on a faculty recital at Juilliard. Maria is both a pianist and a harpsichordist, and I first met her when she gave a demonstration of the harpsichord for the students in my theory classes.I’ve always been captivated by Bach’s series of Two-Part and Three-Part Inventions. With the Two-Part Inventions, I’m amazed how Bach could create such wonderful intricacy and counterpoint with only two voices. I consequently modeled my inventions after the counterpoint of Bach, involving the traditional contrapuntal devices he used: imitation, development, harmonic and modal shifts, fragmentation, and sequence, essentially creating a dialog between two completely equal voices conversing with each other!Bach wrote 15 Two-Part Inventions (as well as 15 Three-Part Inventions, not to mention the 48 preludes and fugues in The Well-Tempered Clavier!), and that’s just the start of his voluminous repertoire for the keyboard! I was happy just to write three!!!Each of my inventions has a distinctive mood. The first is in a relaxed, yet cheerful C Major tonality (as a nod to Bach’s Invention No. 1 in C Major); the second is heartfelt and lyrical; and the third invention (involving a Gigue rhythm in the compound meter of 12/8) is energetic, and full of life and spontaneity. The third is primarily in a minor tonality, resulting in a feeling of drama, bringing the THREE INVENTIONS to an exciting finale.

Angel of Dreamers is a song cycle for bass-baritone (or mezzo-soprano) singer, trombone, and either string orchestra, string quintet, or piano. It is based on the extraordinary poetry of the Jamaican-American poet, Lorna Goodison, whom I have had the great pleasure of getting to know in the course of writing this piece. The work was commissioned by a friend from my undergraduate college years at The Eastman School of Music, Maury Okun, trombonist and director of the Detroit Chamber Winds And Strings. The work was premiered in 2011 by bass-baritone Daniel Washington, trombonist and U. of Michigan faculty member David Jackson, and the string section of the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings. Daniel and David gave the second performance of the work with Lorna Goodison and Maury Okun in attendance at The Juilliard School the following year. I was approached by Maury Okun and David Jackson to write this piece as a tribute to Maury's father who had recently passed away. They also introduced me to their colleague and friend Lorna Goodison, suggesting her poetry. Reading several volumes of her work, I was absolutely captivated by the vivid imagery and beautiful messages of her words. I chose five of the poems, forming a cycle about life and death and home and parents. Lorna is originally from Jamaica, and the rich, vivid imagery, language and story lines of her poems beautifully reflect her roots. The work, in the tradition of Brahms' songs for voice, viola, and piano, features a singer with an obligato lyric instrumental line, which, in my piece, is the trombone, an instrument that blends so beautifully with the sound of a bass singer. The first song, O Love You So Fear the Dark is hopeful and uplifting, describing enduring love throughout the twists and turns of our lives. The music is strong and declamatory, but also tender. The second song, God A Me actually portrays a fish in Jamaica which is almost amphibious, flying up out of the water onto the land, and somehow, magically, returning to the water! For me this poem depicts the enjoyment of seeing parts of life that are fun and enjoyable and almost magical! The third song, All Souls Day depicts a holiday, somewhat magical, but also full of life and energy. The final two songs are a tribute to our parents -- My Mother's Sea Chanty, recalling a dream of seeing one's mother, with lyrics of tender love and remembrance, and finally, This is my Father's Country which is a tribute to the life of a loving father, recalling his spirit, his love of the music Harry Belafonte, and his enduring spirit. Angel of Dreamers was a special piece for me to write: for and with friends, old and new, collaborating with a poet whose beautiful, meaningful, and touching words were so inspiring, performed by fantastic musicians who poured themselves into the music, and commissioned by a dear friend from years gone by. THIS is why we write and perform music!.

A beautiful cantabile song without words, A SONG FROM THE HEART has all of Ewazen’sexpressive elegance, yet is performable by student-level players as well as on formal recitals.Originally composed for Trumpet and Piano, Ewazen created the flute transcription for CindyAnne Broz as the title track for her Albany CD including three Ewazen works.A SONG FROM THE HEART was originally composed for Trumpet andPiano and is dedicated to Dennis Caron on the occasion of his retirement. It wascommissioned by his wife, Marsha Caron, and was premiered at Dennis’s retirementparty by our mutual friend Charles Schlueter, long-time principal trumpet of theBoston Symphony. A SONG FROM THE HEART is filled with lyricism and richharmonies, as the trumpet line sings and soars over a rich accompaniment. The flute version of this work was written for my dear friend Cindy Anne Broz, for herAlbany CD including first recordings of 3 of my flute pieces. Cindy was wonderfulin helping me with my flute arrangement, as I heard her lovely, bright high register– hence my putting some key passages of the piece up an octave, shaping the phrasestructures to flatter the lyrical flute sonorities.

The Colorado Mesa University Wind Symphony, under direction of Dr. Calvin Hofer, has hosted the annual and continually growing Best of the West Music Festival. In 2007, Ewazen was guest composer and commissioned for a new concert band work to celebrate Grand Junction and the towering Grand Mesa that rises above the town. Inspired by this grand landscape, I set out to write a work which was rich, resonant, colorful and bold, a tribute to this amazing scenery which I ultimately had the pleasure of seeing and exploring first hand. For intermediate to advanced bands.

A commission by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West allowed Ewazen to consider the ten years following the events of 9/11/2001, resulting in A Time of Strife, a Time of Peace. The first movement considers the long wars and the losses entailed through soaring lyrical lines above a rhythmic, pounding accompaniment, as Ewazen puts it. The second movement is a bittersweet celebration on the death of the perpetrator and a future of joy, peace, and life. Ewazen says, A burst of joyous energy bringing this chapter in our history to a close..

An unsual grouping of instruments is used in this unusual and intricate performance piece, which was inspired by the incredible Buddhist mandalas (or cosmograms). Ewazen infuses the work with his impressions of three specific mandalas that captured him, as well as performance touches that reflect Buddhist tradition and practices. The three movement work is dedicated to the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble. For advanced performers. Duration: 24'.

A true family affair, Ewazen's Quartet from the Heartland was written to celebrate the retirement of a good friend and long-time band director. The instrumentation reflects those practiced by his wife (flute) and daughters (trumpet and horn), who performed the work at a surprise party with the composer at the piano. The Quartet is an arrangement from the first movement of Ewazen's Heartland Symphony, which he describes as lively, energetic, playful, and joyous..
