Bohusl av Martinu wrote his First Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932-33, this work having been commissioned by the violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However, it was never performed during the composer's lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. It was not until 1961 that musicologist and collector Hans Moldenhauer bought it from Boaz Piller, contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Moldenhauer approached Czech violinist Josef Suk, who gave the world premiere of the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti in October 1973.This piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition. The solo part has been revised by a leading Czech violinist and performer of Martinu's music.* Major violin concerto of the 20th century* New Foreword by Martinu scholar Sandra Bergmannova (Cz/Eng/Ger)

The two concertos contained in this volume represent two different stylistic periods within Martinu's work. TheConcerto da Camera(1941) is the last of his works inspired by the Baroque concerto grosso. TheRhapsody-Concerto, composed eleven years later (1952), was the first work of his so-calledfantasia period, marked by a more open sense of form and an expansion of tonality. The edition of theConcerto da Camerashows, for the first time, the extent of Martinu's modifications to the work since its composition and publication, particularly to the solo violin part. The edition of theRhapsody-Concertotakes into account previously unknown contemporary performance materials which have recently been discovered. This volume of the Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition (BMCE) is based on a wealth of text and music sources, in particular autographs and contemporary copies that were recognized by the composer and early performers of the works, as well as some first editions produced under the supervision of Martinu.

Bohuslav Martinu’s “Field Mass” is one of his most significant vocal-instrumental works. It originated in 1939 in Paris in response to the outbreak of World War II and was intended for outdoor performance. The libretto, by Jirí Mucha, contains references to the Bible. This study score adopts the musical text from the Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition, Volume VI/2/2. As an interesting performance alternative, the appendix contains an early version of the ending that quotes the medieval Czech hymn “Jezu Kriste, štedrý kneže” (Jesus Christ, Generous Prince).

Unusual instrumentations were by no means the exception in the chamber music works of Bohuslav Martinu, most notably the works he wrote in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s being characterised by his experimentation with sound and form. It is from this period that four short serenades also originate (1932), each with a different instrumentation. The serenades were issued by the Prague publishing house Melantrich in 1949.Their premiere took place two years previously on 16 October 1947 and was performed by members of the Prague Symphony Orchestra (FOK).Although the study score of the Serenades Nos. 1 and 3 was published while the composer was still alive, he was in fact not involved in preparing this edition; indeed, the performance material also appeared in print without his participation in 1954. It was therefore decided to use the autograph score as the principal source for this edition.

ThePetite Messe solennelleis the finest work of Rossini's late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with theStabat mater, the mass is one of the composer's mostimportant sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini's day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this, other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements.- Choral score based on the Urtext of the seriesWorks of Gioachino Rossini- Supplements the already existing material available to this work

Martinu composed the one-act operaArianeover the course of a single month, in June 1958. He prepared the libretto himself according to his friend Georges Neveux's playThe Voyage of Theseus(1943). Most of the text was taken from the second and third act, besides Ariane's lamentation at the beginning of the fourth act, which he adapted as a grand coloratura aria within the opera's finale.Soon after its completion, in summer 1958, and hoping for a world premiere at Milan's La Scala, Martinu entered the opera into a composer's competition organised by the Italian publishing house Ricordi to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding. When the contest was called off, Martinu offered the work to Barenreiter in spring 1959. Both the full score and the vocal score (arranged by the composer) were published posthumously in 1960. The premiere took place at the municipal theatre in Gelsenkirchen in 1961.The main source of this scholarly-critical edition is the autograph score, while the vocal parts are also based on the autograph vocal score as a referential source. The Appendix offers the original beginning of the work with an entirely different orchestration, which is also reproduced as a facsimile.
