for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra-In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel’s most thrilling compositions and for Wittgenstein the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel’s Piano Concerto For The Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor Douglas Woodfull-Harris was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace thework’s evolution from Ravel’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition. A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel’s own Piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. This copy is the sole source reflecting Wittgenstein’s own interpretation and containing his changes to the final cadenza. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the Piano reduction and enabled the editor amongst other things to correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions including the solo Piano part. The Piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel’s and Wittgenstein’s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein. Score and orchestral parts in large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm) Includes source descriptions and a Critical Commentary with alternative readings (Eng) Informative Introduction on the work’s history and genesis (Ger/Eng/Fr) With facsimile pages Piano reduction with separate Urtext solo part enclosed Full score & parts (BA7881) and two-Piano reduction (BA7881-90) available for sale.

Sonata In G Major:
Violin: Score Violin and Piano G. Henle
Violin Sonata in G major-Inspired by Béla Bartók’s Violin sonatas Ravel...(+)
Violin Sonata in G major-Inspired by Béla Bartók’s Violin sonatas Ravel planned his own sonata for Violin and Piano in 1922 but at first did not get beyond sketches. Many interruptions ensued and the work was onlyfinished in 1927. He dedicated it to his violinist friend Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Regarding the sonata’s sparse thinned out compositional structure and instrumentation Ravel later emphasized thatthe sonata proved the tonal incompatibility of the Violin and Piano. Yet it still succeeded in winning a permanent place in Violin repertoire – not least because of its middle movement inspired by jazz elements and the“blues”. The fingerings in this Henle Urtext edition have been provided by two masters of their instruments: Christian Tetzlaff and Pascal Rogé.

It was unmistakably Liszt?s piano piece ?Les jeux d?eau la Villa d?Este? that inspired Ravel to compose one of his most famous works in 1901: ?Jeux d?eau?. Laid out in sonata form its sound is governed by myriad motions of water and sustained by innovative highly virtuosic piano textures against a freely migrating and richly coloured harmonic backdrop. Nicolas Southon has re-evaluated the work?s many sources including memoirs from musicians close to Ravel such as Vlado Perlemuter Jacques Février and Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Special attention has been devoted to the original part-writing in Ravel?s notation. Rounding off the new edition are an informative Foreword atrilingual glossary as well as fingering and notes on performance by Ravel specialist Alexandre Tharaud.

The title of Ravel?s Miroirs (1904/05) can be interpreted as ?reflections? of the human world of experiences. Among the nature pictures in this cycle ?Une barque sur l?océan? is particularly popular forming a pianisticcomplement to Debussy?s orchestral work ?La mer? which was written at about the same time. The spacious arpeggios with fifths fourths and seconds hovering above them in subtle rhythms paint a maritime tableau that is in agenre all of its own: on the one hand we have a stylised picture of a boat at the mercy of the wind and the waves while on the other hand an allegory of the volatile nature of human life. This is the second separate edition of apiece from Ravel?s ?Miroirs? to be published by G. Henle Publishers after ?Alborado del gracioso? (HN 1295).
