Symphony No.3-The Pastoral Symphony premiered on January 26 1922 and somewhat puzzled audiences with its rejection of the established classical themes in favour of a more folk based work. Nevertheless it continues to rise in popularity and is firmly settled amongst Vaughan Williams greatest works. This is the Study Score for Full Orchestra and Solo Soprano or Tenor.

This engaging work was composed in 1929 and premiered the following year by its dedicatee the legendary Spanish cellist Pablo Casals. The five folk songs on which the work is founded are 'Salisbury Plain' 'The Long Whip' 'Low down in the broom' 'Bristol Town' and 'I've been to France'. This arrangement for solo Viola and Orchestra is compatible with the original Orchestral accompaniment materials for which are available on hire.

Ralph Vaughan Williams was an English composer. His works include operas ballets chamber music secular and religious vocal pieces and orchestral compositions including nine symphonies written over nearly fifty years. Strongly influenced by Tudor music and English folk-song his output marked a decisive break in British music from its German-dominated style of the 19th century.Vaughan Williams was born to a well-to-do family with strong moral views and a progressive social outlook. Throughout his life he sought to be of service to his fellow citizens and believed in making music as available as possible to everybody. He wrote many works for amateur and studentperformance. He was musically a late developer not finding his true voice until his late thirties; his studies in 1907 08 with the French composer Maurice Ravel helped him clarify the textures of his music.

Vaughan Williams’ Six Studies In English Folk-Song is a simple yet effective work which has been adapted here for E flat Alto Saxophone by Robert Stanton. This is the solo part only. Also suitable for ABRSM examinations for Alto Sax.

This Fantasia is founded on the following traditional English carols: The Truth Sent From Above (Herefordshire) words and tune; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen (Somerset) words and tune; On Christmas Night (Sussex) words and tune; There Is A Fountain (Herefordshire) tune only; together with fragments of other well-known carol tunes. The work is scored for ordinary full Orchestra with Organ and set of bells (ad lib.) or String Orchestra with Organ or Piano. Alternatively it may be accompanied by Organ or Piano alone played from the Vocal score with an optional solo Cello part (H212). A chorus part for performance bysolo Baritone and TTBB is also available (W41). The chorus is required to sing in four different ways:1. Singing the words.2. Singing with closed lips.3. Vocal ScoreCantata for Baritone Solo SSAA chorus and orchestra Following the revelatory release of A London Symphony in its original version the publication of Willow-wood is another landmark in our deepening understanding of the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams.Last performed in 1909 the year of The Wasps and On Wenlock Edge this setting of four sonnets by the Victorian poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti has recently been reconstructed from the autograph score and orchestral material made available on hire from the publisher. Reflecting the veiled eroticism and sombre atmosphere of the texts the music is dark-hued andsensuous its wordless female choir looking forward to the Five Mystical Songs A Sea Symphony and Flos Campi. In this heightened atmosphere of Pre-Raphaelite passion the composer\'s richly chromatic harmonies sound an unfamiliar note and the piece which lasts about 14 minutes will not only fascinate specialists but also have a broad appeal to many lovers of English music for whom it will be a significant discovery. A recording of Willow-wood on the Naxos label is scheduled for release early in 2006.
