Here is a description of Warming Up Together from the composer, Andrew Friedrichs: Warming Up Together is a book of duets that are designed to provide a musical context as well as a focus on specific areas of technique. There are eight sections in this book that correspond to what I feel are the most fundamental components of trombone technique: tone (long tones), flexibility (slow slurs, wide slurs, and fast slurs), range (high range and low range), and articulation (slow articulation and fast articulation). The idea for this book came out of my own warm up. I was trying to develop a warm up routine that was a series of technical categories rather than a series of exercises, but I also wanted to have the opportunity to be able to play it with someone else. As a trombone player and teacher, I have made specific choices within the duets based on technical challenges that I've observed in my own playing and in the playing of students and colleagues. As a composer, I've focused on addressing various styles in order to keep the duets fun and fresh while allowing the musical contexts to be as far reaching as possible in their application. As a not-to-be-taken-seriously backrow member of the orchestra, I've thrown in the critical element of terrible humor by way of pathetic jokes and ignominious puns.

Nabucco is the opera which established Verdi's reputation as a great composer and even he realized its importance as he noted this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. iTromboni alum Kenneth Pearce and Andrew Poirier have skillfully set the Overture to Nabucco to highlight the beautiful melodies and technical flare in their arrangement for trombone quintet (2 altos, 2 tenors, bass). As in the original, it all begins with a stately trombone chorale, hints at the big melody of Va, pensiero (the great chorus of the Hebrew slaves) and reaches its energetic conclusion full of gusto! This arrangement is suitable for advanced performers and can be heard on iTromboni's debut album: there goes the neighbourhood.

Tomas Luis de Victoria was the most famous composer of the 16th century in Spain, and one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation, along with Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso. Victoria was not only a composer, but also an accomplished organist and singer. However, he preferred the life of a composer to that of a performer. He is sometimes known as the Spanish Palestrina because he may have been taught by Palestrina.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed his String Quartet No. 1 in D, Op. 11, in 1871. Countless arrangements of its second movement, Andante cantabile, have been made, but it was not discovered until after his death that he, too, had arranged this movement in 1888, his version being for solo cello and strings. In this version, Tchaikovsky transposed the movement, originally in the key of B-flat Major, up to B Major. The singing melody is based on a popular Russian folk song, and it lends itself quite well for performance on trombones. This arrangement premiered February 14, 1997, at the Texas Music Educators' Association Convention in San Antonio, TX.
