Though not as familiar as other holiday carols, this ancient melody has an intrinsic beauty in both its shape and harmonic support. Reflecting those elements, this arrangement creates an evocative sound world. The mood is inspired by viewing the expanse of the night sky. Throughout history, we as humans are connected, in a sense, by the fact that we look up at the same pattern of stars today as those who created this ancient tune so many years ago, which suggests a point of connection over time. In this arrangement you will find a sense of wonder and awe as the melody weaves its way between consonance and dissonance. The re-imagining of this medieval carol reflects the timeless nature of the Christmas season. Heinz Holliger set to music melancholy texts for his eight-part cycle of songs, premiered in 2013, which remind the listeners of the transience and progress of life. The texts range from the medieval Christian mysticism of Mechthild of Magdeburg to Japanese haiku poems from the 18th century (buson) to the contemporary artists Catrin Demenga and Sylvia Nopper.

This is - so far - the earliest composition by Davies to be available for performance, and mighty interesting it is. Written while he was still a young student, it provides a candid glimpse of the thing that concerned him: how music could be both forward-moving in the classical Western sense (this is, after all, a piece for a wholly conventional medium) and repetitive in the manner of the Indian and medieval music in which he was interested. What results is a singular machine geared to an intermittent ostinato in the first violin. This movement for string quartet was first performed by the Arditti Quartet in May 1983, as part of the 40th Anniversary Gala concert of the Society for the Promotion of New Music at the Barbican Hall, London. Score (miniature). Duration c. 5mins.
