'African Patchwork' was created for the European 'Albert Schweitzer Year 2013' in remembrance of the foundation of the hospital in Lambarene 100 years ago (1913). The organ sound, thought of as an ideal here, is the typical 'Albert Schweitzer sound': romantic, soft diapasons and string parts, hardly any mixtures, cymbals and tongues. This dark fundamental sound is joined by the djembe with its richness of high harmonics and its ability of modulation (the best-known of the African drums can be used in different sizes). Depending on the percussionist's creativity, the percussion part, notated in a quite rudimentary way, can be extended by various playing techniques, drum changes and pitch modulations of the drumhead. The notated percussion part can also be used as a basis for intuitive and improvisational playing.

Die Motive der Prinzessin und der Kameltreiber hort man noch in der Ferne und der Marktplatz wird wieder einsam. L'arrive du Calife interrompt l'entrain du marche, la princesse prepare son depart et les chameliers continuent leur chemin. The cattle-drivers slowly approach the market; the cries of beggars are heard across the bustle. The Caliph now passes through the market and interrupts the entertainment, the princess prepares to depart and the caravan resumes its journey as the sounds of the Persian Market fade into the distance.

Kai Nieminen's Le Tombeau d'Albert Roussel (2020) for guitar utilises themes and harmonies from Roussel's ballet-pantomime Le Festin de l'Araignee (The Spider's Feast) op.17 written in 1912. Roussel's work depicts insect life in a garden alluding to human behaviour in a similar way to George Orwell's novel, Animal Farm. Nieminen's Le Tombeau d'Albert Roussel integrates themes from Roussel's Le Festin de l'Araignee with original material which together create a satisfying whole full of imagery, contrasts and colour.
