This comprehensive introduction to Wagner's opera 'Tristan and Isolde' contains the complete libretto with numerous music examples. Kurt Pahlen comments on the work with music-related references as well explanations on the external and internal action. A summary of the plot and a brief outline of the genesis bring 'Tristan and Isolde' into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and his life, thus providing comprehensive, richly illustrated information on this opera.

'Six Pieces' Op. 19 is the first collection of piano pieces by Tchaikovsky which contributed significantly to his growing renown as most important Russian composer apart from Anton Rubinstein. Famous contemporary pianists like Nikolai Rubinstein and Hans von Bulow performed Reverie du soir (Op. 19, No. 1) or Theme original et variations (No. 6) in their concerts in the 1870s. Commissioned by his Moscow publisher P. I. Jurgenson, Six Pieces Op. 19 was composed by Tchaikovsky in the summer and autumn of 1873, i.e. during his time as professor of theory at the Moscow Conservatoire.Bulow had entered 'little changes' in his own copy of the first edition of Variations Op. 19/6. There is, however, no documentary proof which of Bulow's changes Tchaikovsky eventually included in the Nouvelle edition revue et corrigee par l'auteur of Op. 19 published only in 1890. The present new edition therefore contains both versions of the Variations. Tchaikovsky's version of the first edition can be found in the appendix of the present volume, Bulow's version expressly adopted by Tchaikovsky is presented together with Nos. 1-5 in the main text of the volume on the basis of the Nouvelle edition revue et corrigee par l'auteur from 1890.

The triumphal concert hall success of Tchaikovsky's most popular and musically most valuable concert pieces for solo instrument and orchestra was preceded by severe teething troubles. His Piano Concerto No. 1 Op. 23 of 1874/75 was slated by Tchaikovsky's mentor and potential performer at the premiere, the pianist, conductor and director of the Moscow Conservatory, Nikolai Rubinstein. So Hans von Bulow premiered it gratefully and enthusiastically (in Boston, USA, on 25 October 1875). Leopold Auer, violin virtuoso and professor at the Petersburg Conservatory, to whom Tchaikovsky wanted to dedicate his Violin Concerto Op. 35 of 1878, refused to premiere it - he regarded the solo part as unrewarding and unplayable. On 4 December 1881, Adolf Brodsky premiered the Violin Concerto in Vienna, with Hans Richter conducting, but Eduard Hanslick wrote a crushing and unpleasant review. The Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra Op. 33 were finally published by their dedicatee, the German cellist and professor at the Moscow Conservatory, Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, after he had almost completely rewritten and then premiered it on 18 December 1877 in Moscow, while Tchaikovsky, who had asked him to publish the work, was abroad. The original version, which can be found in this edition, was not published until the 1950s.

The essential texts written by Richard Strauss were published, still in his own lifetime, by Willi Schuh in the Atlantis publishing house in 1949. The expanded second edition was published in 1957. Apart from Schuh's biography of Strauss, 'Jugend und fruhe Meisterjahre', and the correspondence with Hofmannsthal, 'Betrachtungen und Erinnerungen' is one of the standard books in Strauss literature.

The prelude to the opera Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg was given its world premiere in Leipzigs Gewandhaus on 11 November 1862 in a concert that Wagner organized in conjunction with Hans von Bulow and the composer Wendelin Weissheimer. Wagner personally conducted his own work. The concert was a financial flop; artistically, however, it seems to have been an extraordinary success, for Wagner reported the following day to Joachim Raff: My Meistersinger was excellently played, and the DaCapo demanded with great sincerity. It sounded very fine. Since then and increasingly after its publication in 1866, two years before the world premiere of the opera the prelude has been a beloved concert piece that impressively exposes the major themes of the Meistersinger. The prelude is a beloved concert piece that impressively exposes the major themes of the Meistersinger..

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has not only seen and carried its share of the eventful history of its home town. Being one of the world's most important concert orchestras, it has, in addition, become an excellent ambassador of culture.Herbert Haffner tells the story of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - from their formation in 1882 out of the Bilsesche Kapelle (Bilse's Band) via the period of inflation, two World Wars, the Berlin Airlift and the German reunification until the present day. He does not conceal economic and personal crises, showing that the development of the orchestra mirrors the social and political circumstances of the time. The Philharmonic Orchestra is marked, almost as strong, by the continuous reorientation towards its principal conductors, from Hans von Bulow via Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado to Sir Simon Rattle. This is not just a book on music, but also an entertaining contribution to the cultural history of Germany in general and to the ever-changing city of Berlin in particular!

The roller coaster of opinions - worthless, absolutely unplayable (claims Nikolaj Rubinstein, basically Tchaikovsky's desired pianist for his Concerto in B flat minor); brilliant, magnificent (Hans von Bulow, then first performer and dedicatee of the work) - demonstrates the work's initially ambivalent reception. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 is one of the most powerful and popular compositions of the classical music repertoire altogether; and it is also quite unconventional and runs counter to the norms of the time. Though it may seem strange to us today, let us recall that during his lifetime, Tchaikovsky was regarded disputable abroad (and especially in Germany), was considered an ultra-modern Russian composer, and was even accused of being a musical nihilist and primitivist. But one glance at the score of the piano concerto suffices to reveal its truly amazing character ...

Joachim Raff's Fifth Symphony Lenore op. 177, composed in 1872, reveals the composer as a representative of the middle ground between Neo-German aesthetics and the symphonic tradition. It owes its name to G. A. Burger's ballade, which is the programmatic basis of the final movement. Using this literary model, Raff oriented himself to the Berlioz program symphonies and the Liszt symphonic-poem concept, on the one hand, but on the other, he let the three preceding movements follow traditional symphonic form. Raff conducted the Lenore symphony's premiere in December 1872 in a concert by the Furstliche Hofkapelle in Sondershausen. The concert went to his satisfaction, although the audience evidently did not know what to make of the work: [...] and the symphony [...] was played before this faintly musical party. Essentially for the greater glory of God and my edification, less for that of the said public, which seems to have been rather horrified by it. His friend Hans von Bulow had, however, a great pleasure in hearing the symphony the following year in Berlin. In her preface, the editor Iris Eggenschwiler provides detailed information about the work's genesis, documents Raff's ideas and intentions, and facilitates a comprehensive orientation within the historical context. Breitkopf & Hartel is now presenting for the first time with this symphony an orchestral work by Raff in a modern Urtext edition, thus also continuing its collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Gesellschaft.In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH).

Whereas in past decades Urtext editions with assorted aspirations and readings by various editors were the primary points of departure in addressing Beethoven's piano sonatas, today it is more often the question of what significance so-called instructive editions have in the history of interpretation, what additional benefit is generated from them, and wherein lies their legitimacy. Unlike his teacher Hans von Bulow in his edition of the sonatas, Lamond did not allow any intervention in the music text per se. His indications give instead interpretive approaches, additionally inspiring today's musicians in the realization of the musical composition. By the beginning of the 20th century he was a successful and celebrated pianist, concertizing in the US and across much of Europe. He repeatedly caused a stir with his Beethoven projects such as performing sixteen sonatas as well as the Diabelli and Eroica variations within four days at the Queen's Hall in London (1925). Dating from this period is also his edition of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas that first appeared from Breitkopf & Hartel in 1923. Frederic Lamond thus epitomizes Beethoven interpretation. Even today his name is still associated primarily with Beethoven. The present ,,Instructive Edition of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas is a part of the ,,Breitkopf Originals series on the occasion of Beethoven's 250th Birthday in 2020. Apart from the established Urtext editions, this reissue opens up a fascinating view on the interpretation- and performance practice of one of the most important Beethoven interpreters in the 19th and 20th century. The Scotsman and his Beethoven - The 32 Piano Sonatas in the Instructive Edition, edited and supplied with fingerings by Frederic Lamond.
