I've been "playing piano" since the age of 6, though I did not really apply myself until the age of 14 since I hated practicing (I'm so glad my Teacher and Mom put up with me for that long). In the 3 years following I learned to love the piano and completed levels 4a-6 moving on to more difficult pieces. After high school graduation, shortly before I turned 18, I discontinued my lessons. Now I play at my leisure mastering pieces that look impossible at first glance (Spring Song by Mendelsohn for example), play offeratory and fill in sometimes for the pianist at my church, and occasionally compose songs (I always have at least one in progress).
I've also been teaching myself to play violin, since I had to quit after an 8 week intro course because the teacher had no openings for regular lessons -I definitely need a lot of practice!! Other Instruments I also dabble in include the recorder and guitar. Some day after college, when my poor college student status is no more, I would love to buy and learn the harp. 6+ I can't exactly say, since I've slightly regressed since discontinuing my lessons.
